6 Signs of Hail Damage

You may see your neighbors inspecting their homes, together with their licensed roof contractor, for signs of damage or doing some minor repairs to prevent any serious structural damage in the future. Before stepping up that ladder to do an inspection yourself, here are the possible signs of roof damage that you can expect after a hailstorm:

1. Missing Shingles

Watch out for gaps in the pattern or pieces of exposed roof. You may also see shingles on the ground near your home. When the integrity of the shingle has been compromised,  water leak can develop over time.

2. Damaged Shingles

Hail damage on asphalt and composition shingles may look random, with no discernable pattern. Its indentations may look black or soft to the touch like a bruise on an apple. Check also for shingles that are curled, buckling, dented, or cracked. Insurance roof claims normally would require a 10ft x 10ft square on at least three sides of the roof.

3. Asphalt Granule Buildup in Gutters

Without a protective layer of granules, the shingle becomes vulnerable to UV light degradation. It speeds up cracking, blistering, algae formation, edge damage and water leaks.

4. Gutters Troughs Dented, Hanging or Missing

Hail impact may not only damage gutters, leaving dents, but can also knock off already-loose troughs when hit.

5. Damage to siding and window sills/casings

Dings, dents and other signs of impact may also be seen on sidings and windows if significant damage has occurred on the roof. Check any other exposed metal surfaces, like metal fascia on the roof eaves for signs of hail damage impact, even if it looks like a faint ding.

6. Damage to Air Conditioners and Other Outdoor Units

Some damage to outdoor units like vents, chimneys and skylights may also be observed after a hailstorm.
