Efflorescence: A Common Problem in Certain Siding Materials

Comparing various exterior siding materials reveals differences in terms of composition, installation methods, and overall aesthetics. If you are considering a cement-based siding material like stucco or fiber cement, take note that they are prone to efflorescence.

Creative Construction Group, one of the leading residential roofing contractors in the area, also offers top-notch siding services. In today’s article, we discuss what efflorescence is, how it forms, and how it is removed.

How Efflorescence Forms

Efflorescence refers to a chemical process in which the surface of a cement-based product shows discoloration due to the presence of salt and moisture. Certain materials like stucco, concrete, and fiber cement are known to be porous and contain salts and other minerals. Once they absorb moisture, the water slowly dissolves the salts found within them.

When exposed to the sun’s heat, the absorbed water slowly drains out to the material surface, carrying with it the salts. Then, moisture evaporates, leaving the salts behind in the form of white, powdery deposits on the surface.

How Efflorescence Is Removed

According to siding and roofing installation pros, the white salt deposits won’t cause any structural damage to the cement-based siding product, but they can detract from its beauty and appeal. Removing efflorescence, unfortunately, is a labor-intensive process.

Pressure-washing the siding surface is often recommended by manufacturers to dissolve the mineral deposits. An acid wash may also suffice, but extra care must be observed when using acid-based cleaners. In some cases, cleaning might be repeated to completely remove this unsightly problem.

If you are in the market for new siding, consider the engineered wood variety from LP Building Solutions. At Creative Construction Group, we offer LP® SmartSide® siding material that combines treated wood with resins and water-resistant waxes. The result is a product that looks like wood bust resists moisture and decay. It comes pre-primed and can be painted any color. More importantly, it won’t experience discoloration from efflorescence because it doesn’t have natural salts or minerals.
