Shingle Colors: Monotone Vs. Blends

“Monotone” and “blends” are two words you will hear often when choosing among asphalt shingle colors. Residential roofing company Creative Construction Group discusses the conditions that make one of these asphalt shingle color types more appropriate over the other.

Monotones and Blends, Explained

Monotones, or solid colors, pertain to asphalt shingles that have a single color all throughout, resulting in a roof that has a uniform look. Traditional three-tab asphalt shingles often come with this color type. It is worth noting that while roofing with solid colors can be perceived as plain or basic, it looks great depending on what exterior it is paired with.

Blends, on the other hand, is the type of shingle colors that incorporate two or more colors, or shades of the same color. It is often seen on laminate or “dimensional” shingles, as it can be manufactured with layers of different colors. Residential roofing contractors recommend blends for homeowners who want to have a rustic, textured look to their roof.

Choosing Between Monotones and Blends

The important thing to remember about choosing roofing colors is that it has to work with the rest of the exterior, particularly the siding. Unless your siding will be replaced at the same time as your roof, then your home’s existing siding (as well as permanent components like brick or stone) will play an important role in choosing between monotones and blends.

Your roof color should not have the same visual texture as your siding; the plainer the siding is, the more blended your roof color should be. If your home’s exterior features a stone veneer, don’t pair it with an equally busy blended roof, otherwise it will look cluttered and busy. A roof with a solid color would be more appropriate. Conversely, homes with plain lap siding will benefit from the visual texture and variation brought by a roof with blended colors. Fortunately, roofing manufacturers offer a wide selection of roofing colors, in three-tab and laminate, that will fit your planned exterior color palette.
