There are many types of siding materials available, each with its own set of benefits. You need to weigh their benefits according to your needs. Depending on how you look at it, one type of material is considered an upgrade from the other. For example, you can consider vinyl an upgrade from wood shingles because the former requires minimal maintenance. Or it could be the other way around. Wood shingles can be an upgrade from vinyl in terms of aesthetic benefits. When you put your choice of material in context of your needs, you should be able to pinpoint what would work as an upgrade for you.
Project Scope
The project scope encompasses the work needed to replace the siding. Certain materials may require more installation work than others. If your project has time as a factor—perhaps you’re taking the opportunity to upgrade your siding by way of storm restoration and residential roof repair—then you will need to choose siding that has a shorter installation time. You should also consider that the bigger the scope, the costlier the project will be.
Condition of the Exterior Wall
Problems with the exterior wall must be addressed first before considering an upgrade. No matter how efficient the insulation of a siding product has, it won’t perform as expected if the exterior wall itself has insulation problems. When choosing a siding contractor, make sure to ask if they will be able to address such problems in addition to installing the siding itself. Note that the actual condition of the exterior wall (and therefore the extent of the repair work) won’t be determined after the old siding is removed. The costs will likely be on top of the original quoted project cost.
